Marma Chikitsa is the ancient unique method of healing related to Kalarippayattu, the traditional martial art of Kerala. This system of knowledge is very ancient and sacred. The Indian mythology describes that it was Lord Shiva who created the Marma chikitsa. This invaluable heap of healing knowledge is widely popular in south India and gaining much deserving popularity in every nook and cranny of Kerala state. Like in Ayurveda treatments, Marma chikitsa also broadly classifies treatments in to two. They are Sarira siksha and Sarira raksha. Sarira siksha is the various methods of treatments for numerous illnesses and conditions like fractures of bones, dislocation of joints, sprains, rheumatism, paralysis, low-back pain, spondylitis and many disorders based on Marmas or vital points. The massages in Marma chikitsa are scientific, systemic and unique in its characteristics. Very learned and experienced person only can do these massages which are included in Marma chikitsa as it needs so many years to learn this art and requires a thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.Sarira raksha is a positive way of balancing physical health, mental health and beauty. Radiant skin, silky smooth hair, healthy and shapely body can boost one’s confidence level in to new heights. The special massage therapy and the different herbal packs and powders used for skin and hair care are some of the methods used in it.

This is a simple massage with medicated oil, recommended for general fitness of the body. It tones up the muscles increase blood circulation, relax joints stimulate the nervous system and is good for sense organs.

Chavitty Uzhichil

A massage specially for obese. It is also for general body fitness, tones up muscles, softens tissues and improves the blood circulation. The masseur uses his feet to massage the body.

Kati Vasthi

Specially for sciatica, osteoarthritis of hip and lower back. A small receptacle of dough is made on the affected region to which lukewarm medicated oil is poured and kept for sometime.

Nali Swedam

Certain precious herbal leaves and herbs are boiled and the steam is passed to the whole body for 10 to 20 minutes. This is good for certain skin diseases, to eliminate impurities from the body, to improve the tone of the body, to reduce fat.


Nasal administration of various medicinal substances. It is good for sinusitis, facial paralysis and migraine.

Patrapodala Sweda

The leaves of certain herbs are made in to a bolus from in a cotton cloth and are pummeled on the affected parts after a therapeutic massage with suitable medicated oil.

Rasayana Uzhichil

This is three in one item. They are 1.Rejuvination therapy 2.General body massage and 3.Medicated steam bath. This aims at preventing the destructive effects of ageing on the human body together with promoting the quality and quantity of one’s life span. General body massage to revive tired and jaded muscles, general vitality and for a cool mind. Medicated steam bath eliminating toxins from the body by inducing profuse preparation. A specially designed cabinet is used for steam bath.

Sarwanga Dhara

This is a process traditionally followed once a year to keep the body fit and healthy and prevent ageing of cells and tissues. Warm herbal oil is poured all over the body by two or more trained masseurs in a specific rhythmic manner continuously for 60mins.

Shashtika Pinda Swedam

An effective treatment for nerve weakness, emaciated limbs and joint pain. The body is gently massaged with linen bags filled with njavara rice paste that has been cooked well in milk and herbal decoction.

Siro Abhyangam

Head is massaged with herbal oil. It includes shoulders also. It helps in reducing mental tension and promotes better blood circulation. It cools the system, gives you sound sleep and rids you of headaches.

Siro Vasthi

A highly effective treatment for facial paralysis, hemiplegia, dryness of nostrils, mouth and throat, severe headache and sinusitis. Luke warm herbal oil is poured into a cap fitted on the head of the person for about 10 to 60 minutes for a period of 3 to 7 days.


A specialty of Kerala Ayurveda Treatments in which herbal oil is poured in a rhythmic manner on the forehead of the person lying on the back. It relaxes the entire nervous system.


The procedure is the same as sirodhara with the exception of medicated buttermilk being poured on the forehead of the person instead of herbal oil.


This is for obesity related problems. It increases blood circulation, tones up the body and melts subcutaneous fat. Here the massage is done with herbal powder.
